Climbing Club
Climbing Club
The Climbing Club was established after Children First Derby Youth Forum identified climbing as an activity that they felt would develop a young person’s skills. The programme enables young people to work towards a National Indoor Climbing Award Level 1 and 2.
Climbing involves problem solving, teamwork, discipline and respect for others as well as providing a sense of achievement. The British Mountaineering Council research states it develops ‘personal responsibility.’
“I like climbing because when you have a stressful week it gives you a break from it all and you can put it behind you and seeing my climbing skills improve has boosted my confidence massively and I also enjoy making new friends”.

“Running the Children’s First Derby climbing club on a weekly basis has introduced the centre to a wide variety of children and abilities. The young people are a delight to instruct and seeing their social skills and confidence increase is a great joy”.

“I found the opportunity enjoyable - I was nervous at first, but my confidence grew. Interacting with others in the group got better every week, the conversations was interesting, and I got on with the other kids who were facing similar challenges. I also had and the chance to achieve a level 1 certificate, this was surprising to me as I didn’t think I would have got it, but I did and can now belay and do a figure of 8 without staff helping me”
